Wilson Pickett and Eddie Floyd had been
bandmates in the Falcons.    Floyd later moved to
Washington, D.C., and met radio DJ , Al Bell who
would later head Stax Records.
Floyd, now a Stax songwriter, had been
co-writing         "634-5789 (Soulsville, USA)" with
Steve Cropper.

In December 1965  Wilson Pickett returned to
Memphis to try to recapture the magic date to his
breakthrough hit "In the Midnight Hour." The two
were so excited about the song that they took
Pickett straight from the airport to the studio to hear
a demo.
Even though Pickett didn't liked the song at first,
the recording session was held on December 20,
1965. Cropper played on the session along with the
other members of Booker T. & the MG's.
"634-5789 (Soulsville, USA)" parked at number one
R&B for seven weeks, while going to number 13 pop
in the spring of 1966.
